Betsy Jo Photography Blog bio picture
  • WELCOME!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm Betsy, and I like taking pictures-- of people, most of all. I'm wife to Paul and mother to Joel, Nora and Connor. They are my favorite subjects. I'm a Special Care nurse by day, a knitter and reader by night. I love New England, and Cape Cod most of all.

I am available for some limited travel, especially if it's to Ireland or some other lovely clime.

Wanna' get in front of my camera? Get in touch and we'll set up a session!

Senior: Sydney

Here are the rest of your featured senior pictures, Sydney! I’ll be sending along your gallery link soon– many more to choose from.

So remember the spot I mentioned in Sydney’s sneak peek post, where we found a random little treasure? We had this neat concrete wall backdrop/loading dock thingy, and I was so happy with the texture and light there. As we were leaving, I commented to Sydney how much I loved the location. I turned around to get one last look, and then I saw it– a very random, leather, kind of beaten-up looking couch that was just forlornly looking as if it needed to be used as a prop. Of course, I obliged. Now, I realize that these may not be the kind of photos one would blow up into huge images for display, but doesn’t it make for a neat shot?:)Sydney agreed.

We had a few good laughs about our choice of prop:

Thanks again for your friendliness, willingness, and just plain niceness!:)All the best for your senior year!

Family: (n) a group of related things or people.

Here is a look into a beautiful evening shoot with soft, filtered light for photographing– As well as some haze, humidity, and ridiculous heat. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

Amy & Rob, Cami & Boden, thanks for welcoming me into your home and being so easygoing. You did a beautiful job!

Sneak Peek: Sydney, Senior.

This was a great session, full of easy smiles and a laid-back nature from Sydney. Even when I would make some ‘odd’ suggestion for a location, she completely trusted me. I did ask her if she thought I was crazy, and she said, “Yes.”;)But, that’s fine. She still trusted me!:)

Sydney, you were so easy to work with, and it was nice meeting you! I was just going to post a couple, but figured a few more would help to hold you over until I can get a full post up for you. There are so many more that I’m really looking forward to showing to you. Thanks for being so willing!

So, what is it with girls from Stafford High all having such beautiful eyes lately?

Who knew the Snip could be so pretty?

I love how the shadows help to tell the story in this next one:

I have something from this next spot that I’m so ready to share when I finish up the pictures for Sydney. Random spot that caught my eye, and just as we were leaving, I looked back at the area and said how much I loved it. And then I saw it. Something so random and surprising, and incongruous with the spot, that I just had to go back and shoot some more. Right, Sydney?:)Later, when I got home and saw the images we got from our random find, I was smiling without realizing it. And my daughter looks at me and says, “Mom, why are you smiling at the computer?” Yup. ‘Can’t help it. I love my ‘job.’

Cherish: (v) to care for tenderly; nurture.

There’s something so moving about seeing a new mother and father care for a newborn baby. They soak in his softness, the sound of his little breaths as his chest rises and falls. Their hands caress the soft hair on his round, perfect head, as if to memorize its shape and feel, to hold him close. His little toes splay outward, and his mother grasps them in her hand, as if to quiet his movements and help him relax– while his father holds his baby’s hands, pride showing in his smile as he looks into his boy’s eyes and talks to him, man-to-man.

There’s something about seeing it take two people to get a little guy into his onesie, mom holding him up while dad scoots down the top, holding the baby’s ‘nuk’ securely in his mouth, so as not to let it fall. To be able to view through my lens the little arms splayed out, reacting in surprise to a noise or some sense of change. The little lips, all red and formed in a little ‘o’ as if he has some important, exhilarating discovery he wants to share.

There’s something about seeing a newborn and remembering my own. The way our firstborn would make the softest little ‘purring’ noises when Paul rocked him to sleep, as if to let us know he appreciated his Daddy’s efforts. The way Connor’s nose scrunched in contentment when he chugged away at any bottle we were willing to give him- and his loud protests when its contents were extinguished. Supporting Nora’s peach-fuzz-encased little round head, so small and floppy it felt like holding a fragile bird; her tiny-voiced cries sounding like a little wren. There’s something about babies. Watching them grow. And having a little part of me wish I could slow down time, to go back and soak it in just a little more.

Because, really, there’s nothing like it.

I absolutely love this next one. Huge yawn.

Scott and Kim, thanks for letting me into your home and trusting me with your beautiful memories! It was such a privilege for me– and, as you can tell, brought back some sweet memories of our own little ones, who aren’t so little anymore. All the best to your new little family!
